In addition to the ArcXML Programmer's Reference Guide in WebHelp, the following related documents and files are also included with ArcIMS:
An ArcXML DTD. An XML Data Type Definition (DTD) is available for use with ArcXML 1.1. This DTD defines the structure rules for the elements and attributes in ArcXML and checks for document validity. The DTD can be used with many XML editors, but since ArcIMS requires UTF8 encoding, editors that support UTF8 encoding are recommended. The following two editors support UTF8 encoding:
XML Spy: http://www.xmlspy.com
Xeena: http://alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/xeena
A note when using ArcIMS Author in files edited with an XML editor: in some XML editors, when a DTD is used, a DOCTYPE statement is written at the top of the document. The DOCTYPE contains information on the location of the DTD. If you open a map configuration file in ArcIMS Author that contains a DOCTYPE statement, this line will be deleted if you save the file in ArcIMS Author.

A directory of shapefiles commonly used with examples throughout the guide. Shapefiles included are cntry94, cities, states, province, world30, and some New York City shapefiles.
On Windows, the ArcXML documents and files are installed during a typical setup and are located in the following directory:
The files are also available from the ArcIMS Custom Setup. On the Installation Type screen, select Custom. On the next panel, the ArcIMS Components and Installation Directory screen, uncheck all components already checked, and check Documentation. Next, click Options and select only the ArcXML Programmer's Reference Guide. All the ArcXML documents are copied to the same ArcXML_Guide directory as listed above.
On UNIX, the DTD, the ArcXML Programmer's Reference Guide in WebHelp and PDF formats, and the shapefiles are found in the directory:
