This document contains important,
late-breaking information on the following topics:
System Requirements
On the PC, ArcPad 7.0 supports
the following versions of Windows:
On mobile devices, ArcPad
7.0 supports the following versions of Windows:
- Windows Mobile 2003
- Windows Mobile
2003 Second Edition
- Windows Mobile 5.0
- Windows CE 4.2
- Windows CE 5.0
On Windows Mobile and Windows
CE devices, ArcPad 7.0 supports the ARM-based CPU chips. These include CPU
chips from the following manufacturers:
- Intel (StrongARM,
XScale)
- Samsung
- Texas
Instruments (OMAP)
- Atmel
Microsoft ActiveSync
3.8 or higher is required to synchronize your mobile device with your PC.
The ArcPad Tools for ArcGIS® Desktop require ArcView®, ArcEditor™, or ArcInfo® 9.0 or higher.
Installing ArcPad 7.0 SP1
Previous Installation Requirements
It is required
that ArcPad 7.0 be previouslly installed on a supported desktop PC prior to
installing the ArcPad
7.0 Service Pack 1. The ArcPad 7.0 SP1 installer overwrites certain
files that were previously installed with ArcPad 7.0 on that PC. If you intend
to use ArcPad on a mobile device such as a Microsoft® Windows Mobile device,
or Windows® CE device, you must install Microsoft ActiveSync®
version 3.8 or greater on your desktop system before installing ArcPad
7.0 SP1.
The ArcPad 7.0 SP1 installer, for supported Windows Mobile and CE devices,
is a full installation therefore, a previously installed version of ArcPad
7.0 is not required. On Windows Mobile and Windows CE, it is highly recommended
that you uninstall any previous version of ArcPad and ArcPad fonts before
installing ArcPad 7.0 SP1. However, if one chooses to directly install over
the previously installed version of ArcPad 7, on a syncronized mobile device,
they will be prompted with several installation dialogs.
To install any of the mobile components of ArcPad, connect your mobile device
to your desktop PC using Microsoft ActiveSync and on the PC choose the desired
component you wish to install from the ArcPad 7 program group:
- Install ArcPad 7.0 Application on Windows Mobile
- Language Packs for Windows
Mobile
The ArcPad 7 program group
on the PC is located under Start>All Programs>ArcGIS.
If one chooses to overwrite a previous installation on a mobile device they
will be presented a series of dialogs:
This first dialog on the PC will be: Please check your mobile device screen
to see if additional steps are necessary to complete this installation.
You will then receive a dialog stating that "ESRI ArcPad 7.0" is
already installed. Do you want to proceed with the re-install/upgrade? Click
OK
You will then receive a dialog stating to snstall "ESRI ArcPad 7.0"
using the default application directory? Choose the directory that you previously
installed ArcPad 7.0 to.
The File in use dialog is to overwrite files in memory including system fonts
on PPC 2003 devices You will need to click NO to overwrite files when prompted
and proceed with installation. (You may not be prompted with this File
in Use dialog on devices running Windows Mobile 5).
File in use Dialog:
The file "\Windows\Fonts\esri_11s.ttf" is in use or is in ROM. If the file is not in ROM, please close the application using the file. Try Again? Click the No button.
The file "\Windows\Fonts\esri_30s.ttf" is in use or is in ROM. If the file is not in ROM, please close the application using the file. Try Again? Click the No button.
The file "\Windows\Fonts\esri_49s.ttf" is in use or is in ROM. If the file is not in ROM, please close the application using the file. Try Again? Click the No button.
The file "\Windows\Fonts\esri_144s.ttf" is in use or is in ROM. If the file is not in ROM, please close the application using the file. Try Again? Click the No button.
The installation of ESRI ArcPad 7.0 SP1 will now commence on the mobile device.
Performing a Full Installation on Mobile Devices:
- Removal of ArcPad from your mobile device
can be performed using the Add/Remove Programs option from the Tools
menu in Microsoft ActiveSync while your mobile device is connected
to your desktop system. Alternately, you can use the Remove Programs
option from the Settings menu on your mobile device.
- There are issues on mobile devices with uninstalling
or overwriting fonts. It is recommended to remove the ArcPad font manually
by using Windows Explorer on the desktop to navigate to the \Windows\Fonts
directory on the connected mobile device and using the standard file delete
in Windows Explorer to remove the file esri_30.ttf. The ArcPad Fonts
have changed at ArcPad 7.0, and new fonts have been added, so it is recommended
that you uninstall the existing ArcPad Font from previous versions of ArcPad.
The new ArcPad fonts are automatically installed with ArcPad 7.0 - on the
PC, Windows Mobile, and Windows CE.
- If you choose not to remove the ArcPad font
from your mobile device, you will receive a "File In
Use" error message when installing ArcPad 7.0 on your mobile device.
The latest version of Microsoft
ActiveSync and other related technical information and resources can be found
at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/default.mspx.

Known Issues
The following are known issues with the ArcPad 7.0 release:
ArcPad 7.0 does not support JPEG 2000 images created by ER Mapper,
or ER Mapper ECW JPEG 2000 Compressor.
Workaround: Use software such as GeoExpress by LizardTech to convert images to JPEG2000 format.
Large toolbar
buttons do not display correctly on Windows CE 4.20.
Workaround: do not use large toolbar buttons.
Some label font
sizes are not applied. The cause of this issue is that not all fonts support
all font sizes. Only sizes which are supported by the selected font are applied.
Workaround: Select a different font size.
Taking
a photo with the camera tool on a Windows Mobile device may result in an error.
The cause of the error is most likely due to insufficient free memory to store
the photo image file. As a result, the camera module in ArcPad 7.0 on the HP
iPAQ hw6515 only supports resolutions of 640 x 480; 320 x 240 and 160 x 120.
Workaround: Reduce the resolution for the output image file in the camera tool
settings.
The AVICamera
module (on the PC version of ArcPad) is currently limited to supporting cameras
that support RGB compression. This is the case for most modern cameras, but
not older cameras such as the IBM UltraPort camera. The IBM UltraPort camera
uses YUV compression, and not RGB compression.
Workaround: Use the camera independently of ArcPad, and use the Pictures page,
of the Feature Properties dialog box, to associate the photo image file with
the feature.
