81 Protecting and Securing Our Nation “Mountain Home Air Force Base needed an agile space planning tool to support the relocation of approximately 100 people closer to operations and maintenance facilities. ArcGIS Indoors enabled us to calculate space utilization parameters quickly. This has resulted in considerable time savings; an increase in accuracy in the workflow; and a more transparent data-driven process. Additionally, by leveraging commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology with a familiar interface, we were able to reduce the need for specialized skill sets and training from engineering assistants and GIS analysts,” Maria (Tracy) Meeks, chief, Engineering Flight, Mountain Home Air Force Base. The Mountain Home AFB Space Utilization study is used to view office and facility attributes as well as space utilization statistics. The engineering flight team expressed interest in expanding the system’s capabilities, including incorporating the Internet of Things (IoT) for emergency equipment tracking, crowdsourcing work orders, navigating within buildings, and aiding in construction planning. The team members envision a comprehensive system that not only optimizes space but also facilitates sustainable practices and aids in emergency response protocols. The successful implementation of this GIS-based solution has modernized the base’s space management and paves the way for future advancements, demonstrating the potential for innovation and efficiency within Air Force operations.
